chiang mai
owes her existence to the River Ping. The river provided the
route along which the power of the city could be extended beyond the wall of
mountains that surrounded the valley; it was a channel for trade from China
and Burma to the Gulf of Siam. The wide, fertile valley was able to support
a large number of people, the basis of political power in the feudal Kingdom
of Lan Na (the Kingdom of a Million Rice Fields).
Chiang Mai is a city built on the roots of a traditional heritage that dig
deep into the soil of time.
Named "Rose of the North" for the abundance of flowers that thrive in the cooler
mountain climate, it has grown from its origins as a small northern Lan Na
Kingdom to become a city representative of modern Thai culture - with a
beautiful cultural personality of its own. In addition, it has been blessed with
much majestic beauty in nature! The people themselves are an unforgettable part
of Chiang Mai. Handicrafts of silk, silk and wood are timeless souvenirs for
visitors from all over the world.
About
700 kilometres from Bangkok, Chiang Mai is situated on the Mae Ping River basin
some 310 metres above sea level. Surrounded by high mountain ranges, it covers
an area of approximately 20,107 square kilometres. The terrain is mainly jungles
and mountains, parts of which are within national parks which are still fertile
and verdant with plentiful flora and fauna. There are many sites and locations
where tourists prefer to visit to study the lifestyle of the tribal people who
live on high hills.
It
is relatively small compared to Bangkok in size and population, it ranks as
Thailand's second largest city after the capital. Originally, the city was
surrounded by walls and a moat, parts of which can still be seen along with the
gates. It is within these walls in the old city that a visitor feels closest to
Chiang Mai's past. And it is in many of the surviving temples or wats, enclosed
within these walls, that the city's rich historical heritage lives on - the
pride of its 250,000 inhabitants

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS
- Visit Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, 3,520 above sea level with a large
pagoda containing a part of the holy relics of
the Lord Buddha. A stairway of some 300 steps lead you to the top, which
affords splendid views of the city and its surrounding plains. There is also a cable car
to whisk you to the summit if the climb seem too daunting. In the 14 century, the amazing tale of the building of this temple began when an elephant
with a Buddha relic strapped to its back was turn loose in the belief that a temple would
be build at the spot where the creature stopped. The elephant climbed the slope of Doi
Suthep and the Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep was built at its present site. The Buddha relic is now
contained in a large golden pagoda in the center of the temple
